The beginning
A childhood surrounded by plenty, devotion and a rare mind
Shri Nandkishore Sharda, whom everyone lovingly calls Bhaiya, was born on 16 July 1944 in Jodhpur, into the prosperous and devout family of Tulsi Devi and Vijaykishan Sharda. He was a bright student of science, with a rare mind and a radiant personality.
From childhood he had a deep tendency to question. His gaze did not stop at material achievement, but was drawn steadily towards knowing the root mystery of life.
1959 · an inner awakening
His father's passing gave his life a new direction
In 1959, when he was only 15, the sudden passing of his father shook him to the core. In that moment he felt deeply the impermanence of the physical body.
He resolved firmly that he would not be caught up in the pull of materialism and its comforts. He would seek out that power of consciousness which keeps this body moving. What is the purpose of human birth, how should life be lived, and what is this power — these questions became the axis of his sadhana.

The direct experience of Jagatjanani Maa Tripurasundari
Bhaiyaji went to many sadhus and saints, tantriks, mantriks and mahatmas, and read spiritual and religious books, but he did not find a satisfying answer. One day, in the valley of Jodhpur's Mehrangarh fort, he saw a temple on the tekri — the hillock. There he found a wonderful peace.
He worshipped Jagatjanani Maa Tripurasundari single-mindedly, day and night, with longing and the ache of separation. Maa Tripurasundari heard the call of her beloved devotee, gave him her direct darshan, and granted him her boundless powers. Bhaiya and Maa became one.
Taking Jagatjanani Maa herself as guru and mother, he did sadhana of the highest order.
divine wisdom
A whole vision of science, the cosmos and the power of consciousness
The nectar-like divine wisdom Bhaiyaji received by taking Jagatjanani Maa as his guru, he carried — beginning with science and moving beyond its limits — to the structure of the cosmos, the origin of creation, nature, the divine realms, the existence of God, the goal of human life and the importance of the power of consciousness.
This divine reflection was set out in “The Wonderful World After Death”. Reading this book, a person's faith and trust in God and in the power of consciousness grows firm. A full account of his personality, his work, his handwritten diary, his surrender to Maa and his philosophical thought is found in his life-record and the memorial volumes.
Karma Sadhana
Work devoted to the education and sanskar of girls
Within selfless action, Bhaiya Shri Nandkishore Sharda gave education and sanskar to thousands of girls through the Swami Vivekanand Students' Welfare Charitable Trust, founded in 1996 for the education of girls.
This work lit a ray of hope in many lives and cleared the way to a bright future. Living in the world yet untouched by its distortions, working ceaselessly, tirelessly and selflessly, he set an example of a life of steady wisdom.
The method of practice
Buddhi-Vivek Yoga Sadhana: a simple path for today's age
Bhaiyaji became adept in all four difficult practices — bhakti yoga, jnana yoga, nishkam karmayoga and yoga sadhana. He saw that in today's age these practices seem extremely hard for an ordinary person.
For the welfare of all, he simplified these practices and drew in what was needed, and set out a new, simple, timely practice named Buddhi-Vivek Yoga Sadhana. Bhaiya himself did the hardest tapasya, yet showed humanity a simple path to move towards the spiritual while living a material life in joy, peace and happiness.
A divine inspiration that clears the path for everyone
On 24 January 2003, Vivekananda Jayanti, Bhaiyaji left the physical body. Today his high thought, his ideal action, the experiences of divine wisdom and his spiritual insight clear the path for everyone, moment by moment.
Hundreds hold him as their guiding inspiration, and bringing his principles into life, grow in the spiritual world alongside a householder's life.
Bhaiyaji's contribution in this age is without parallel. He gave a new way of thinking, a new method and new knowledge, suited to the material, the social and the spiritual alike — awakening a consciousness devoted to restoring human virtue.
The Bhamashah honour — recognising a public struggle for education
Bhaiya Shri Nandkishore Sharda and Maa Basanti Manihar did all of this work neither for fame nor for any financial gain — for them it was a mission. For that very selfless service through the Swami Vivekanand Students' Welfare Charitable Trust, the Rajasthan government's Education Department honoured Bhaiyaji with the state-level Bhamashah certificate of honour for five consecutive years — 1999 to 2003 — for the scholarships and school furniture given to girl students of Jodhpur and Barmer districts.
The final certificate, for 2003, reached the Trust even after Bhaiyaji had left the physical body — as if the state, too, gave his service an unbroken recognition. Bhaiyaji never held these honours as personal achievements; he dedicated them to the very students in need who were making their way out of the hardest circumstances.
Roads named in his honour
To honour Bhaiyaji's knowledge, sadhana and devoted work for girls' education, and to keep his memory forever alive, the administration dedicated roads in his name in three towns.
